An investigation into studies of atrocities by guards employed by Prince Harry’s charity African Parks has acknowledged that a number of abuses occurred, confirming allegations of violence made by Baka folks.

The investigation was carried out by Cherie Blair’s regulation agency Omnia Technique, after complaints by Survival Worldwide, and a main report by UK newspaper the Mail on Sunday.

Survival had been calling on African Parks to place a cease to years of abuse by their guards in opposition to Indigenous Baka folks whose ancestral land has been taken over by Odzala-Kokoua Nationwide Park within the Republic of Congo, which is managed by African Parks.

One Baka man informed the Mail on Sunday’s Ian Birrell: “African Parks are killing us slowly. We’re struggling a lot that we would as effectively be useless.”

Prince Harry, previously President of African Parks, was elevated to the Board in 2023.

African Parks has refused to make Omnia’s report public, nor allowed Omnia to take action, however has issued a brief response to it.

Survival Worldwide’s Director Caroline Pearce mentioned in the present day: “Omnia’s investigation has confirmed that a number of abuses have taken place in opposition to the Indigenous Baka folks.

“Baka women and men have been crushed, tortured and raped in Odzala-Kokoua Nationwide Park by rangers who’re managed and paid for by African Parks. The charity has identified this for a few years, however it was solely after Survival complained to Prince Harry, and the following world media story, that the charity lastly commissioned this “unbiased investigation.”

“We nonetheless don’t know the small print of what they discovered, as a result of African Parks has refused to permit the findings to be made public. It has dedicated to extra studies, extra workers and extra pointers – however such approaches haven’t prevented horrific abuses and violations of worldwide human rights regulation within the decade or extra that African Parks has identified of those atrocities, and there’s no purpose to imagine they’ll achieve this now.

“The foundation of the issue – which the investigation didn’t handle – is that African Parks continues to cling to a racist and colonial mannequin of conservation which kicks out the Indigenous folks whose land it’s, whereas outsiders take management. So long as that is the case, the Baka will proceed to face abuses and the destruction of their livelihoods. The Baka are the forest’s greatest guardians: governments, foundations, and movie star supporters like Prince Harry, ought to pull the plug on African Parks now, and cease their complicity on this crime.”
