Because the Amazon burns, our anger strengthens our will to withstand

As we speak is Amazon Day and Indigenous peoples in Brazil and their allies world wide are protesting in opposition to the fires destroying the Amazon rainforest and President Bolsonaro’s battle on Brazil’s first peoples.

Bolsonaro and his agribusiness colleagues – by racist phrases and genocidal proposals to steal Indigenous land – are launching the most important assault on Indigenous rights for 50 years. The variety of assaults and invasions of Indigenous territories is sky-rocketing, and the fires, many set by unlawful loggers and ranchers, are destroying the forest at an alarming and heart-breaking tempo. The survival of entire uncontacted tribes – essentially the most susceptible peoples on the planet – is at stake.

Indigenous peoples are preventing again, extra united than ever earlier than. In January, they led the most important ever world protest for Indigenous rights. In April, hundreds gathered in Brasília to take their pressing messages to the guts of presidency, and now, for Amazon Day, the world is protesting once more, to inform President Bolsonaro to #StopBrazilsGenocide. Our anger solely strengthens our will to withstand.

Indigenous peoples – nature’s greatest guardians – have fought to guard their lands from outsiders for over 500 years and so they most undoubtedly gained’t cease now. As Sonia Guajajara says: “We’re placing our our bodies and our lives on the road to attempt to save our territories.”

Collectively we’ve gained many victories during the last 50 years. We are able to win this battle too. Indigenous peoples’ survival, and the survival of all humanity, is dependent upon it.
