Land rights
A number of Penan villages have filed land rights claims within the Malaysian courts for areas over which Samling holds logging concessions. Certainly one of these instances has been pending within the courts since 1998. The corporate claims on its web site that it ‘function[s] throughout the confines of the regulation which the federal government prescribes,’ and that within the authorized disputes through which it’s concerned, ‘the true concern issues the federal government and the native communities’. Nevertheless, Samling government James Ho stated in an interview on Swiss tv in 2007, ‘The Penan don’t have any rights to the forest.’

A report launched in September 2009 by the Malaysian Ministry for Ladies, Household and Neighborhood Growth verified allegations that Penan ladies and women had been raped by logging firm employees.
