Belo Monte dam – Survival Worldwide

The Brazilian authorities is developing the Belo Monte mega-dam on the Xingu River within the Amazon.

The dam, if accomplished, would be the third largest on this planet and it’ll flood a big space of land, dry up sure elements of the Xingu river, trigger large devastation to the rainforest and cut back fish shares upon which Indians within the space, together with Kayapó, Arara, Juruna, Araweté, Xikrin, Asurini and Parakanã Indians, rely for his or her survival.

The livelihoods of 1000’s of tribal individuals who rely upon the forest and river for meals and water could possibly be destroyed.

The inflow of immigrants to the world throughout the building of the dam threatens to introduce violence to the world and produce ailments to those Indians, placing their lives in danger.

FUNAI has said that there could also be some uncontacted Indians close to the location of the dam. These uncontacted Indians are most in danger as they’ve little or no resistance to outdoors ailments, which could possibly be deadly for them.

Kayapó Indians and different tribes of the world have been protesting towards the dam because it was initially proposed within the Nineteen Eighties.

In a letter to President Lula, the Kayapó mentioned ‘We don’t need this dam to destroy the ecosystems and the biodiversity that we now have taken care of for millenia and which we will nonetheless protect’.

The Indians say that they are going to oppose the dam in any respect prices, and that if building proceeds, the Xingu river will turn out to be a river of blood.
